Muir Trail Ranch

Delivered packages on the JMT on June 14 during 2014.

As of March 1 Muir has not posted up 2015 backpacker resupply instructions, but Muir Ranch opens with the timing of the Spring Thaw.

2015
In recent years snow has not been a factor, and I expect the lack of snow to continue this year, allowing Muir Ranch to open at the earliest date possible.

2017
Snow will be a significant issue this year, and will substantially delay resupply services.

NOTE

TRAIL GUIDE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

MARCH 2015

The South Sections of the Trail Guide from Tuolumne Meadows to the Whitney Portal are under preliminary construction.

The miles and elevations, maps, and resupply information should be up by April Fool's Day 2015.

The Tahoe to Yosemite and Pacific Crest Trail guides are complete in draft form from Lake Tahoe to Tuolumne Meadows.

The Beginning and the End

Muir Ranch marks the beginning of the longest section of the Tahoe to Whitney Trails.

I have it at 132 miles off the top of my head.

That's nine days at 15 miles per day. Plus, this section is full of splendid beauties that demand our attention off the main body of the JMT.

I have evolved my plans to carrying two extra days of food through this section to give myself the ability to explore, scramble, and bag a few peaks.

Two days of extra food works out to four half-days off, or two full days. These can be used to explore Darwin Bench, Center Basin, explore the Rae Lakes region, and scramble extensively around Evolution Basin, if not climb Evolution Dome and a few of the local peaks.

But the pack with 11 days of food is very heavy, and I sure as hell don't know how to protect all the food. I bring one food canister that holds five days of food fully stuffed.

So I have to hang a big food sack or two until it all fits into the canister. I hang the trash and the lightest calorie food, protecting my most calorie-dense foods in the canister.

So
